Can Lycos jump to the top again?

27. March 2007
A few years ago Lycos was a big player in the web 1.0 era operating as a search engine as well as offering a wide range of web-services such as "build your own website", web-hosting, online-communities or e-mail-accounts, but nowadays it seems as if it has vanished into thin air.

Google, Yahoo and MSN are today's big players in search engine business, investing large amounts of money on new search technologies and advertising to hold their positions. And now the managing director of Lycos, Christoph Mohn, is saying that Lycos is going to be top-player again in just a few years time. Looking at the search engine market share for february 2007 it becomes clear that Lycos has a very long way to go. The search engine Lycos currently attracts only 0,02% of the market.

Lycos Europe is planning to attack the US market with some new services combining search, email, photo and file storage, blogging and text messaging, which have become very popular especially to young internet users. Lycos is trying to catch up on "The Big Three" mentioned above in web 2.0. In the US it won't be possible to trade under the Lycos brand, because it is owned by South Korean-based Daum Communications, the desicion is made to use the name Jubii which is a Danish subsidiary of Lycos.

Experts don't think that the project will succeed as the gap to the three market leaders has grown to big in the past years. Nevertheless Mohn is convinced Lycos will be back on top again and says that in only a few years, people will see a whole different "Lycos" than nowadays.

We will see what the future holds, but never hesitate to invest on Search Engine Marketing and Optimisation, as the advantages for YOUR business are clear.
