Google boosts social networking alternatives
31.October 2007
The battle against the two giants: Google and Microsoft is still rolling! With the recent news on "Microsoft acquiering facebook shares" it is time now for Google to shoot back by launching a system that will give the opportunity to developers to create applications for a variety of social networks.
At this time developers have to give their customized design for a specific site with many are already partner with the potential competitor Facebook.
The new Google open social system is the way to compete with Microsoft which took a 1.6 %share with the popular social networking site. Google will allow a wider distribution for tools like Facebook's music recommendation service iLike and its TopFriends application.
For the instance, Google has 12 social networking partners who signed up to the system which include LinkedIn, Friendster and Google's own social network Orkut.
The difference with Facebook is that the open social network will allow developers to write in normal Javascript and Html only and you will just need to do minor adjustments for the code on the social network platform. This is an improvement because according to Michael Arrington from TechCrunch's "Developers have been complaining non stop about the costs of learning yet another markup language for every new social network platform, and taking developers time in creating and maintaining the code,". The new Google plan is clever, because it will pursue many developers to work with Google partner applications and consequently strengthen Facebook's rivals.
